War Memorial Garden Project Begins

War Memorial Garden Project Begins

The Millisle & District Somme Society is proud to announce the beginning of a significant new chapter in our mission to preserve and honor the legacy of those who served in the World Wars. Our War Memorial Garden Project is now officially underway, marking a meaningful step in both remembrance and education for future generations.

For over twelve months, the Society has been working closely with a range of key individuals to bring this vision to life. Meetings have taken place with the Housing Executive, Department for Infrastructure, Local Councillor, our Local MP, and the Principle at Millisle Primary School. We are grateful for their guidance and support as we navigate the early phases of planning.

The chosen site for the Memorial Garden is a plot of land adjacent to Millisle Primary School on Abbey Road. This location is central to the community and allows for easy access by schoolchildren, local families, and visitors. Our aim is to create a thoughtful, reflective space where the sacrifices of those who served our country can be both remembered and understood.

Once complete, the Memorial Garden will serve as both a place of quiet reflection and a living educational resource. We hope it will provide opportunities for learning, community engagement, and events that honor the memory of the men and women who fought during the World Wars.

Over the coming weeks and months, we will continue refining our plans and working through the necessary permissions to make this garden a reality. We look forward to sharing progress updates and involving the local community as the project develops.

We will hold public consultation in due course that will allow the local community to come and see the detailed plans of our Memorial Garden and raise any concerns if applicable.

Together, we will ensure that the bravery and selflessness of the past are never forgotten.
Lest We Forget.
