ABOUT US

The Millisle & District Somme Society was established in 2018 with a simple but powerful purpose: to ensure the sacrifices of those who served in war are honoured and remembered within our community.
Our work is grounded in remembrance, education, and engagement. We are committed to keeping the memory of the Battle of the Somme alive, along with the many other conflicts that have shaped our shared history. Through our efforts, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of the events leading up to, during, and following the First World War, and the impact they continue to have on generations today.
One of the key moments in our calendar is the annual Remembrance Parade held in Millisle Village. This event brings together local flute bands, Somme associations, Orange lodges, and members of the wider community, including support from our MLAs and MP. It is a powerful reflection of unity, tradition, and collective memory.
As a society, we believe in creating lasting connections between the past and the present. Whether through public events, educational outreach, or community partnerships, we are proud to play a part in preserving history and passing it on with respect and pride.
